Visual Arts Gallery of the India Habitat Centre has come a long way since its inception in the July 2000. The India Habitat Centre has established itself as a locus, a platform for cultural activity, where there is an opportunity to display creative talent or witness excellence on display. The Visual Arts Gallery has been a hub of uninterrupted art activity spanning different genres, and crossing many a boundaries. From the visual art to seminars, and now traversing the path of the digital world, the Visual Arts Gallery has a finger on the pulse of contemporary art trends leading to a sharing and union of energies and ideas. The Gallery works in a multi-dimensional manner. From showcasing two-dimensional works to three-dimensional works, we are trying to bring the best of art traditions both nationally and internationally. There is also an interface between what is termed 'high art' to popular art traditions, very much in keeping with the philosophy and vision of the India Habitat Centre.
In the last fourteen years, as perhaps the largest non-profit centre in the country, we have been supporting art, crafts, material culture, emerging talent, and also the medium of photography. The immediacy of the medium of photography forms an inherent trajectory of the visual arts. Photography is now a serious art practice and we have hosted works by some of the well-known photographers of the country, namely Amit Pasricha, Amit Mehra, Prabir Purkayastha, among others. Their photo exhibits indeed herald the coming age of photography, and speak of the new levels to which photography is being taken.
AMPHITHEATRE: During the classical antiquity in Greece, the open-air venue Amphitheatre was used for entertainment, performances, and many other cultural activities. Working on similar lines, the India Habitat Centre’s Amphitheatre is used for cultural activities like music, theatre, talks, poetry reading, documentary screening, various language festivals, art competitions, and many other activities. The venue regularly promotes and encourages the activities, which have been pioneer in their own way.
The Amphitheatre can accommodate approximately 200 people.

The Habitat Centre situated in the heart Lutyens Delhi has over the years become a key space of artistic dialogue and provides a spectacular space for showcasing some of the best works of Indian Art.
We are now opening our outdoor spaces for showing art which is not part of the mainstream of commercial art practices. The Visual Arts Gallery is starting yet another initiative by opening up its spaces. Public art outdoor, interactive art on walls surfaces and process based art in the Experimental art Gallery is the second paradigm shift in our policy. We invite individual artists and cultural institutions to collaborate with us.
Public art is one of the most significant aspect within the art world, not just amongst curators, commissioning bodies, collaborations but also with the audience. In Delhi as well as in most parts of India, public art is still marginalized by the fine art community. Some of the contributing factors are lack of education, public art criticism and evaluation. Unless the work comes to a some kind of controversy, it seldom comes to attention towards the media coverage. This form of expression brings about community values, enhances our environment and heightens our awareness – an art which is a form of a community expression. It is a reflection of how we see the world and the response of the artist in the time and place where we are in. In many countries artists who are commissioned to make public art end up practising in public. In art schools, studio artists end up honing their skills within the safety of their private studios. This is different from public art where most public artists learn from their mistakes since the audience is watching them every step of the way.
We at the India Habitat Centre have encouraged the arts since the time of its foundation was laid. Proudly standing tall are some of the displays of Ram Kinker Baij, KS Radhakrishnan, Ray Meeker to name a few. We welcome artists in any stream to send us their proposal to showcase their works at our 3 available outdoor spaces, namely the atrium, side entrance as well as next to the amphitheatre. (Please refer to the photographs) Public art offers an articulation of the historic, cultural, economic, and cultural context of the outdoor spaces; a commitment to the reinforcement and enhancement of the community's identity. We welcome sculptures, installations, new media to explore our spaces.

India is celebrating its economy and when there is an economic flowering, the arts are given a new leash of life. And we are part of this luxury and privilege of creating new paths and new histories of art and aesthetics. While contemporary Indian art is reaching unbelievable benchmarks in money terms, we at the Visual Arts Gallery are interrogating philosophical aesthetics, but that does not deny the intrinsic value of art. Over the last 14 years, the Visual Arts Gallery has become one of the most significant spaces of cultural consumption. The Gallery is the spring board for the much needed dissemination of high art and the cultural translations of popular art. With the integration of different art forms and a movement towards a multi-disciplinary approach, once again the gallery becomes a pioneer in injecting a much needed trajectory.
The Visual Arts Journal, published annually, becomes the voice of the Visual Arts Gallery, its concerns and motivating ethos. The publication for the past ten years has explored the various facets of the Visual Arts be it critical vocabulary or new-media, digital arts, installation et al. Not only does it have a thematic content to it, but it also has a documentary aspect to it. Every possible event held at the Visual Arts Gallery, apart from the regular exhibitions, is documented. In addition, the journal also serves as a compendium of all the special projects, for instance: lectures, talks, workshops, performance, interactive sessions are all recorded in the journal. In this way the journal becomes a manner of cultural link with our readers. In a single read like a diorama the events of an entire year are run through the journal.
